Education Associates Question Abolition of Corporal Punishment in the Proposed Education Reforms.
The proposals of the Presidential Working Committee on Education Sector Reforms continue to draw criticism from stakeholders in Thika, who also question why canning was not brought back into the classroom.
Many interested parties argued against the committee’s choice and asked that canning be reinstated.
They said that the ban on canning will prevent educational facilities from being destroyed due to indiscipline and drug addiction. This was during an event of the Gatumaini Primary School alumni organization on Saturday in Thika.
Canning should be reinstated in schools, based on Mr. James Kabugu Ngige and Ms. Monicah Ndirangu. They both emphasized its crucial role in deciding a child’s destiny as justification for the move.
“Reintroducing canning was one of the key proposals expressed by the majority of committee stakeholders. We knew it would reduce drug usage and disrespect among students. It has, however, been ignored. We think the Ministry of Education would think about this, Ngige continued.
Parents applauded the course reduction, saying it would relieve students of the burden of having to carry about so many books. This will also reduce burden of the number of topics they must take.
The committee reduced the number of lower secondary themes from 14 to 9. Lower primary schools will provide seven topics instead of nine. On the other hand, upper primary schools will offer eight instead of twelve.
They suggested that fewer subjects be offered so that students may focus on fewer topics.
