Entry grades for teaching courses. Teacher education is expected to change in the country. This is according to a raft proposal by the Presidential Working Party on Education Reform(PWPER). Teacher education in the country will change incase it is implemented.
According to expectations from the report that will be submitted by president William Ruto later this week, members of parliament are expected to make amendments to various acts. This is necessary because it will make it possible for some changes to be effected.
Among the acts that will be effected are;
- The education act
- Teachers service commission act
- Intergovernmental relations act
- Among others.
At the same time, it has been proposed that entry grades to teachers colleges be lowered. As a result, many students will have a chance to be enrolled in these colleges. The colleges are said to be underutilized lately.
Latest statistics show that, against the teacher training capacity of 26,650 learners, there are only 3,922 students in these colleges.
It has been a challenge to many who wish to join teachers training colleges because they didn’t attain the C plain entry grade for teachers training colleges.
PWPER has proposed that entry grades to TTCs be lowered. This is important because it will encourage many learners from marginalized regions to join teachers training colleges.
In addition, there has been a recommendation that there be changes to the appointment of vice chancellors and deputy vice chancellors for universities.
In the taskforce, there is a feeling that certain legal complexities have hampered the operations of the education sector mostly in the ministry of education.
Apart from this, teacher training is expected to shift to higher education department from the basic education department at the ministry of education.
Further, teacher training and Kenya medical training colleges (KMTC) will be through the Kenya Universities Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).
