When was the University of Nairobi established?
The university of Nairobi was established in 1956. This therefore makes it the oldest university in Kenya. In addition, UoN stands to be the largest university both in Kenya and in East Africa. Origin of the University of Nairobi
The idea of an institution of higher learning in the country was traced back to the colonial era when there was a very high need for offering higher education opportunities to locals. In 1954, The Royal Technical College which used to offer diploma changed to Royal College Nairobi. However, this was just but the first step as the need for university education rose day by day. As a result, UoN was started through a parliamentary act in 1956. At that time, UoN served as the only university in the whole of East Africa.
