School Fees Revised Higher for 2024–2025.
After a suggested review, the secondary school fee structure for all Kenyan schools is expected to rise in 2024. This action is being taken since several causes raise concerns about Kenyan education. Secondary school principals are worried about supplier pressure because of the government’s delayed provision of free learning money.
In addition, administrators of schools have proposed raising fees for 2024 due to the rising cost of living in the nation. It’s important to remember that, in 15 years, parents of children attending free day schools might have to begin making contributions.
Tuition fee adjustments are also anticipated for university students, since a review has been suggested. Starting in 2024, the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (Kessha) has proposed raising fees for all secondary school categories.
Fees for secondary education increased
The greatest fee subscriptions are anticipated to be paid by parents and guardians whose children attend county and extra county schools; school fees increased from Sh40,535 to Sh66,023 annually, an instant rise of KSh25,488. Students in day schools—roughly 70% of all secondary school students—may be impacted by this move as they have previously benefited from free tuition.
For students attending national schools, Kessha has suggested an additional tuition increase of KSh19,628. As a result, the new fee will be Sh73,182, rather than Sh53,554. These plans are motivated by problems like impaired school operations, debt accumulation, and difficulties with infrastructural growth.
The news that university students will be required to contribute a portion of their tuition beginning in the following year is what prompted the increase in secondary school prices. The initial pledges to provide economically disadvantaged pupils with complete support for their education are currently being curtailed, and free education might only be available to those enrolled in elementary and junior school.
Students enrolled in secondary schools were paying Sh22,244 annually as of the conclusion of the 2023 academic year. On the other hand, there have been cases where schools experienced operating difficulties due to insufficient funding from the government.
