SRC clarifies 7-10% salary increment to be effected in two years.
The salaries and remuneration commission has announced an increase in civil servants’ salaries by 7 to 10% backdated to July 1.
For this financial year, 2023-2024,the increase in salaries is going to cost tax payers an extra ksh21.7 billion. Ksh9.5 billion of this will go to instructors.
An estimate by the SRC showed that in two years, the average increase will be at 7 to 10%. This includes the current notch increase which goes up by 3% every year.
In cases where salary structures are frozen, the notch increase will go on as in the budget up to the highest salary point.
Distribution
Ksh 126.9 million will be assigned to executive state officers and ksh 78.9 million to parliamentary state officers.
Ksh308.2 million will go to state employees who are in the judiciary, KSH 408.9 million to country state employees. Civil servants will also get a ksh 1.8 billion.
Devolved governments will receive ksh 4.1 billion while uniformed and orderly forces will get ksh 4.5 billion.
An increase in the number of employees is the major factor in the increase in the overall amount of pay bills. This therefore explains why some areas are going to receive higher amounts than others.
As a developing country, the government will therefore keep on hiring new important sectors in an attempt to obtain the right ratios for efficient delivery of service. Some of these sectors include education, healthcare and also security.
However, according to SRC, an increase in the number of persons employed is not a guarantee to the provision of key services.
The country’s labor productivity maintains at lower levels when compared to other countries’.
This therefore puts Kenya at position 151 of 185 countries in the world. In Africa, Kenya is number 22 of 46 African countries. This is according to the figures by the international labour organization from the year 2021.
