Teachers receive reduced pay. On July 26, educators received a reduced July salary. This was contrary to what was expected after the teachers service commission took new routes on the teachers’ salaries.
However, the educators’ salaries were not affected by the proposed 1.5% housing levy. This is because the implementation of the finance act 2023 was suspended by a court order.
According to some payslips that were seen by education news, educators suffered NSSF deductions. This is different to the past times when they were not deducted.
This comes because teachers’ pension is through a provident fund that is based on their work groups.
It is evident that deductions have been made for all the funds for this month’s salary.
NSSF deductions
These deductions are a KSH.320 flat rate fir all educators. This however appears to be contrary to the KSH. 600 NSSF rate for lowest earners and KSH. 1080 for those who reap the highest. In addition, the rates were effected on February.
The previous rate stood at sh200. According to a pending proposal, the rates are supposed to rise to 6% of one’s salary. The rates are not supposed to go beyond sh18,000.
Early Wednesday this week, confusion was seen among educators who had the money deposited to their banks with no payslips uploaded on the TSC portal. They therefore complained that they couldn’t access and see the nature of these deductions.
In addition, the commission has been making NHIF deductions. All employees according to the latest proposal will be required to pay 2.75% of their monthly pay to this fund.
Previously, educators have been paying a rate of between sh150 and sh1,700 depending on one’s monthly earnings. They are however expected to pay more when the proposal is amended.
According to few educators who spoje to education news, an annual increment included in their salaries had no effect on their salaries since the additional deductions were way more than the salary increment.
In a report, educators and civil servants would miss the salary increment for this month because of delays by SRC in reviewing salaries and also in advising various departments in the government.
