TSC guidelines on teacher promotion. Educators who are employed under the teachers service commission are adviced to advance their career through promotion.
The promotions by TSC are aimed at rewarding performance, facilitating succession planning as well as offering better opportunities for career growth. Consequently, the basic salary and allowances of teachers increase upon promotion.
The grading system for both primary and secondary school teachers was revised following the signing of the KSH 54 billion CBA 2017-2021 between the teachers service commission and the three teachers unions.
TSC promotes educators based on the career progression guidelines (CPGs) which were introduced in 2016. It includes satisfactory performance as well as minimum qualifications among other factors.
Promotion from grade B5 to C1
A newly employed teacher in primary schools starts at job group B5. They will upgrade after three years of service and therefore be promoted to grade C1. In addition, teachers will need no interview or training in order to be promoted.
Promotion from C1 to C2
Secondary school teachers who do not have a diploma in education start at grade C1. Theyr salaries are however not subject to any furm if monthly increment. In addition, promotion to C2 is not automatic as it is to C1. Teachers therefore need to make applications whenever TSC advertises opportunities.
Promotion from C2 to C3
C2 is a senior teaching position in primary schools. It serves as a stepping stone towards becoming an administrator. Promotion to this level is however not guaranteed. Educators therefore have to submit theyr applications since promotion is based on competition and availability of open positions.
For one to be promoted, they just be having atleast three years of experience in teaching primary grades.
Promotion for eligible candidates is however automatic.
