TSC Releases a Program for age Over Fifty Teachers
A retirement program for teachers 50 and older has been introduced by the TSC. The commission has ordered the identification of suitable locations for the retirement awareness program. They did this through a note to county and sub-county directors.
Teachers will congregate at venues within their respective sub-counties that have been chosen for the sensitization program during the course of this week and the following.
Lawmakers are currently working to write legislation that would require all public employees to retire at the age of 55.
It is anticipated that 85,000 teachers and government employees will retire over the course of the next three fiscal years. It therefore lays a heavy burden on the taxpayers since yearly pension costs are expected to approach Sh210 billion.
The Public Service Commission Act of 2017’s Section 80(1)(a) and (b) states that a public officer must retire when they reach the required retirement age. The age is currently set at 60 years for those without impairments and 65 years for everyone else.
Parliamentary committees are discussing decreasing the mandatory retirement age from 60 to 55. This will consequently increase chances for young people in the public service,

The Public Service Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was considered by the National Assembly’s Labor committee on August 3, and it was decided to change the law to set a retirement age of 55. Many MPs spoke in favor of this age decrease, stressing the significance of giving young people’s employment opportunities top priority.
If these suggestions are adopted, a sizable part of the civil officials who are scheduled to retire in the next five years would do so earlier than projected, which could present financial difficulties for the government due to increasing pension payments. The required retirement age was increased from 55 to 60 years old in 2009 as a result of the government’s struggle to pay for growing pension costs.
Notably, a 2016 audit found that 35% of personnel in the national government were between the ages of 51 and 60.
The Public Service Commission (PSC) annual report for the Financial Year 2021/2022 indicated that a total of 3,958 officers left their positions across 47 ministries, departments, and agencies.
The proposed Public Service Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2023 also outlines conditions for acting appointments to public office, requiring that appointees meet all qualifications and competencies for the role. Appointments made without the necessary qualifications will be subject to immediate revocation by the Public Service Commission.
