University of Nairobi to collaborate with Kiama.
UON Council has made an important and unexpected move that suggests a potential reconciliation after weeks of hostility. They presented an olive branch to the vice chancellor Stephen Kiama.
The council has announced its desire to work with him in an unexpected turn of events. This comes two weeks after demonstrations against the VC’s return from leave.
The council and university’s vice chancellor Prof. Kiama will continue to cooperate in accordance with the law and university’s charter. This is according to the council’s chairman Amukoa Anangwe, who stressed in a statement dated October 3.
The declaration of the council emphasizes its commitment to preserving UON’s standing as a hub of academic and research excellence. At the same time, it emphasizes the significance of Kiama’s dedication and support in attaining this aim.

This change comes after the council previously decided to prevent Kiama from carrying out Vice Chancellor duties as of September 25, postponing his six-month leave of absence after just three weeks. When Kiama returned from his sabbatical, the council judged it “unprocedural, untenable, and not acceptable.”
When Kiama asked for a six-month leave of absence due to a disagreement with the council in July, the request was initially granted.
In contrast, Kiama stated in a subsequent letter that he planned to return to work on August 31 after the problems that prompted his leave request, including personal health-related concerns, had been resolved.
By the time he got back, the council had not answered to Kiama’s letter. In an interview after his return, Kiama stated that his five-year contract was proof that he did not need authorization to resume working.
On September 2, despite prior notification and approval from Education CS Ezekiel Machogu, the council abruptly called off a meeting intended to address Kiama’s return, further complicating the matter.
This most recent gesture of goodwill from the council portends a potential turn in the direction of addressing the root problems and reestablishing stability at the University of Nairobi.
