Good news to all Kenyans. Parliament, in its move towards improving the education quality in the country has urged the teachers service commission (TSC),the ministry of education (MoE) and the Kenya Institute of Curriculum development (KICD) to fast-track the teacher retooling process so as to align with the new competency based curriculum (CBC).
Retooling teachers include;
-
- Equipping teachers with modern pedagogical techniques
- Innovative methodologies of teaching
- And also updated subject knowledge that is in accordance with the framework of CBC.
These will therefore enable educators to engage their learners with ease. In addition, they can encourage critical thinking and also foster creativity among learners in the classroom. This will therefore ensure a seemless transition to the competency based curriculum.
The competency based curriculum promotes learning by discovery. It opposes the approach whereby a teacher is the centre of knowledge. Teachers should therefore be perceived as experts who guide in the discovery process, but discovery itself should emanate from the learner.
In education, there are majorly two approaches to learner assessment experience. These are the summative and the formative assessment approaches.
Summative assessment covers Integrated Learning Areas (ILA) and it’s done at the end of a learning experience. On the other hand, formative assessment approaches are done within close range, involving classroom question and answer technique and assigning learners to small groups.

In addition, retooled educators will be adequately prepared to nurture individuals who are well rounded. These individuals will therefore have the capability of competing in the global arena that is very competitive.
