Good news to headteachers. The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has proved to be against Presidential Working Party on Education Reform (PWPER)’s proposal. The proposal stated that headteachers without degrees be demoted.
While speaking in Mombasa yesterday, KNUT secretary Collins Oyuu said that the union is ready to support headteachers to acquire degrees.
Oyuu dropped claims that many school heads have no university degree. He said that a good number of teachers have university degrees and are therefore capable of managing the school.
He however urged that more time be given to teachers who have not completed their studies to do so.
The secretary proved all who think that primary school heads are not graduates to be wrong. He said that the union will not sit and watch teachers being demoted because this according to him is the worst labour practice and will not be allowed.
Further, Oyuu supported the decision made by the task force which demanded on having one complex school which comprises of pre-primary, primary and junior secondary under one headteacher.
In addition, KNUT wants the teachers service commission (TSC) to take over the employment, remuneration as well as the quality of pre-primary teachers.
Counties are asked to relinquish remuneration functions for Early childhood education (ECD) teachers to the TSC. This is according to a proposal by the task force.
The task force recommended that parliament amends the intergovernmental relations act because it will be a sure steppingstone towards achieving this.
This is good news to teachers because they will be managed centrally. They are also guaranteed of having a commission that will always defend them.
