Why interns might miss salary increment. The 84th section of the TSC code of regulations says that TSC shall grant a teacher annual increment at regular intervals until the teacher attins the maximum salary point of their job group.
TSC has confirmed that intern teachers employed this year are going to miss the salary increment. This is because their employment is on contract terms. They therefore do no not qualify for a salary increment.
Primary school interns are given a monthly pay of KSH15,000 while those in secondary as well as junior secondary school get KSH 20,000.
The annual pay rise is applicable to all educators who are on permanent employment under TSC and are subject to pension upon retirement. This therefore means that teachers employed by TSC receive salary increase every year.
However, not all educators under TSC permanent and pensionable basis receive this pay rise yearly. Different from what a teachers union had pointed earlier, according to TSC, yearly increment have never been canceled.
According to the TSC CEO Dr Nancy Macharia, the code of regulations from 2015 which points on the yearly salary increment will remain in use.
Further, the code states that TSC will pay educators salaries according to their grades upon initial appointment.
Kuppet has urged both the TSC and SRC to adhere to the increment in teachers’ July salary.
According to the Kuppet chairperson Akelo Misori, educators are disadvantaged by the high taxes. As a result, their are having a hard time taking care of themselves as well as their loved ones.
Misori also said that TSC and SRC need to take immediate action to finalize teachers’ salary increment that has already been agreed between the president and the union.
